Coming from an Eastie that has moved away from my beloved Tampines hometown – trust me when I say that the East is the best place to grow up and stay in Singapore, no questions asked. Simply put, the East is the perfect balance of old and new developments, thus making it a much-loved location for all Singaporeans, young and old.
According to the official boundaries set by the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the East stretches from Changi to Bedok, failing to account for the popular Peranakan areas of Katong, Geylang and Pulau Ubin. Of course, Easties will declare otherwise, with these three areas contributing significantly to the heritage and lure of the East.
From the bustle of populated towns such as Bedok and Tampines (the most, and 3rd most populated towns in Singapore respectively) where you can find all that you need without needing to leave the estate, to serene and peaceful areas such as East Coast Park or the cafes along the Kembangan or Katong stretch, the East pretty much has everything and anything. Don’t even get me started on all the good food you can get in the East – such as the famous Bedok 85 Market Bak Chor Mee, or the famed Katong Laksa. Thinking about the future of your little ones? Since I was a kid, I was always delighted that I never had to travel out of the area, especially since I had not one but a total of THREE shopping malls – Tampines Mall, Tampines 1 and Century Square! It’s even better now since Century Square – the oldest of the three malls in the Tampines – underwent a $60 million upgrade where there are countless new tenants, including Hai Di Lao!
Beyond the lure of shopping malls, there’s also the huge attraction of Our Tampines Hub – Singapore’s largest integrated community and lifestyle hub providing a myriad of services and facilities for Tampines residents to enjoy.
