Punggol in the Malay language means, "hurling sticks at tree branches to loosen fruits from their stems". This region is known as one of the oldest residential areas existing in Singapore. Punggol was taken up for many government housing projects in the early 1960s. Ever since that time, there have been many condominiums and HDB estates that have emerged in this area. Real estate got a further boost when Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong declared the "Punggol 21Plus" plan in 2007. This plan will not only comprise of residential areas but also many reservoirs for water supply along with other facilities which will be built.
Punggol HDB estate is a great place to settle down as this place is coming up with a project of 3000 units of flats every year and 96,000 flats in the long run. At the moment there are about 16,700 flats, with an additional 2,100 under construction. Punggol has opportunities for water recreational facilities, parks and cycling tracks that make the lives of the residents exciting and fun filled. There is also a new shopping mall set to be completed sometime within the next three years one about the size of the renowned Bishan Junction 8. Dwellers can have a happy dinning experience with the many seafood restaurants
