Home to the first free traditional Chinese medical clinic for the poor in Singapore, the Former Thong Chai Medical Institution testifies to the Chinese pioneers’ spirit of mutual assistance and their generosity towards the poor and needy, providing diagnosis and herbal medicine to all, regardless of origin or social status.
The property, a restored national monument at 50 Eu Tong Sen Street, sits on a land area of 11732 Sqft with a build up area of 13508 Sqft. It comprises of a 2 storey annex building erected on a regular plot of land with road level access. It includes vertical access via an overhead link bridge to merchant court hotel and consists of 4-6 covered private parking lots within the building. The building is air- conditioned throughout and has been tastefully furnished reflect its heritage. Designed in traditional Cantonese style, the property is one of the few surviving examples of secular Cantonese architecture in Singapore. The straight, ornamented roof ridge, coupled with the gable-end walls shaped like Chinese wok handles, is typical of ‘bamboo houses’ (竹筒屋) by the Cantonese.
The Property is bounded by Merchant Road and New Market Road, located close to the heart of the Central Business District and is approximately 1 km from the city centre at Clarke Quay.
