History of Bedok
The name Bedok has been in existence since the time of Sir Stamford Raffles. The town’s name is most likely derived from the Malay word ‘Bedoh’, as there used to be a mosque in the area that would sound its drums 5 times daily to signal the prayer times.
Evolving Through The Years
Early plans to develop Bedok into an HDB town began in 1963. That was when HDB, acting as an agent for the Government, undertook a pilot east coast reclamation scheme using earth excavated from the area.
Since then, Bedok has transformed into the vibrant town it is today, with a good mix of modern amenities and nature. Several developments have also been revamped as part of the Remaking Our Heartland (ROH) programme for the East Coast area, including the Bedok Mall, Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre, and Bedok Integrated Transport Hub.
Notable Places
Bedok Reservoir was created as a result of the deep excavation works to provide earth for the sea reclamation work. A tranquil getaway from the bustling town centre, the reservoir is a popular place among residents for exercise and recreation.
The Bedok Town Centre has been transformed since the first announcement of the ROH plans for the East Coast area in 2011. This includes the opening of Bedok Mall, which was integrated with the Bedok Integrated Transport Hub, Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre, and an enhanced Pedestrian Mall that provides seamless connectivity and a better walking experience for residents within the town centre.
Bedok Town Square is a new community space that was launched in May 2016 to inject more vibrancy into the town centre. Since then, it has drawn many residents and held many community events. Integrated with the Town Square is a Heritage Corner, which features storyboards created to capture the rich history of the East Coast area.
