The conservation and rehabilitation of 75 Maude Road celebrate a journey through time, where a humble shophouse quietly reveals its social, heritage, and historical significance.
A two-pronged approach - preserving and restoring the original front shophouse while contrasting it with a modern rear extension, creates a tactile, layered experience.
This elegant 3-storey Art Deco shophouse is located just opposite Jalan Besar Plaza and is within minutes of City Square Mall, Mustafa Centre, and the Lavender, Jalan Besar, and Farrer Park MRT Stations.
Its strategic location offers great convenience and accessibility, making it a perfect blend of historical charm and modern living.
75 Maude Road holds a significant place in Singapore’s history.
Once a residence of a Hock Chia immigrant, this notable unit played a crucial role during World War II.
It was here that our late forefather, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, narrowly escaped death.
During the Japanese occupation, Mr. Lee evaded a screening process by hiding at 75 Maude Road, spending the night in this very shophouse.
This dramatic episode is vividly recounted in his memoir, The Singapore Story.
Had he not escaped, he would almost certainly have been taken to a beach near Changi Prison and executed, a turn of events that could have altered the course of Singapore’s history.
Maude Road was named after Sir Frederick Stanley Maude (1864-1917), a distinguished British army commander who served in the Second Boer War and World War I.
In the early 1900s, Maude Road became an enclave for Hock Chia immigrants from China, fostering a close-knit community.
Numerous clan associations emerged in the area, serving as cultural and social hubs for the immigrant population.
Today, Maude Road has evolved into a vibrant street lined with boutique hotels and Chinese eateries, breathing life into the surrounding residences.
The shophouse at 75 Maude Road stands as a testament to the area’s rich history and dynamic transformation.
The blend of historical architecture and contemporary amenities offers a unique living experience that is both luxurious and deeply rooted in Singapore’s heritage.
The shophouse itself is a stunning example of Art Deco architecture, with meticulously preserved details that exude timeless elegance.
The interiors are designed to reflect a harmonious blend of historical charm and modern sophistication.
High ceilings, expansive windows, and intricate detailing create a sense of grandeur and luxury.
The property’s strategic location and historical significance make it an exclusive and desirable address.
