Tampines: A Tempting Abode and More

A land of forests, swamp and sand quarries in the past, as well as home to the tempinis (Ironwood) trees from which the town got its name, Tampines today is Singapore’s third-largest and third most populated town. One of the east’s most attractive neighbourhoods, Tampines notably won the World Habitat Award (from the United Nations) in 1992 and has a large array of facilities, offices, malls, other commercial services, and parks. Tampines is also at the crossroads and a stone’s throw away to Changi Airport, Pasir Ris, and Changi.

 

 

Residents of Tampines often remark that it’s been a while since they went to Orchard Road since their shopping needs can mostly be fulfilled near home. Beginning with the trio of Tampines One, Tampines Mall and Century Square, located just next to Tampines MRT station and Tampines bus interchange, the malls include Singapore’s first Uniqlo outlet, two cinemas, many dozens of restaurants and retail shops, a Toys”R”Us, a Sephora, and more. Walking around here, you may find new shops popping up now and then. This area is also home to several famous bubble tea chains like Koi, PlayMade and LiHo. 

 

Yet another notable addition to the trio is Our Tampines Hub, which opened in 2017. Now keeping fit is not just fun but convenient. The multi-purpose complex offers a wide range of activities, such as aerobic dance workouts. It is also home to a five-storey library, a swimming complex, tennis, badminton and soccer courts, a stadium (where Cristiano Ronaldo visited in July), and a running track. After sweating it out, food is mere minutes away with the many restaurants such as Eighteen Chef and Spinelli Coffee, a big food court, and dozens of retail shops. 

Looking for furniture? The giant Ikea, COURTS and Giant seat next to each other about 10 minutes away from Tampines Central. Looking for something fancier like a pair of Massimo Dutti shoes or a Shake Shack burger? Head to Changi Airport or Jewel, a 10 minutes’ drive away.

 

Greenery is key to a wholesome life, and Tampines is not short of it. One you must visit is the Tampines Eco Green, a sanctuary of flora and fauna, and houses open grasslands, freshwater wetlands and a secondary rainforest. Perfect for bird-watching, picnics, jogs, and just plain fun exploration, Tampines Eco Green is also conveniently next to a large workout area equipped with trampolines, street soccer and basketball courts and standard workout stations. 

 

For another green lung, check out Tampines Central Park, which is connected by the footpath to Our Tampines Hub. Two iconic playgrounds - the Watermelon and Mangosteen Playground - sit here, as well as a variety of playthings for children.

 

Within walking distance is Pasir Ris Beach and Singapore’s largest saltwater fishing pond, where one can have a fun and relaxing day fishing, prawning or simply taking in the fresh air.

 

Going the other way, one can jog to Bedok Reservoir via the park connector within 20 minutes.

 

 

Tampines is never far away from central and north Singapore. The area is served by three MRT Stations, Tampines (East-West line) and Tampines East (Downtown line) and Tampines West (Downtown line). Going to town from via the East-West line takes about 30 minutes while going to the North or Downtown takes no longer than 40 minutes. By car, Tampines is serviced by the Tampines Expressway (TPE), which leads to the north, and is close to the ECP and PIE for more central and eastern locations.

 

This vibrant estate is prime as it is a matured one, boasting exciting amenities, quality schools, lush parks and proximity to key areas like Changi Airport.
