Situated at Joo Chiat Place, this newly revamped space now called The Yards is a place of great heritage.
Spread across 184,000 sqm of space, the Yards has developed into an all-inclusive learning environment focused on arts, dance and drama with activities suitable for all age groups. The compound, comprising of 8 buildings and open wide green spaces, has been divided into 3 zones with activities for neuro-typical children, the special needs community and for senior citizens.
Enrich your life and those of your family in the tranquility of The Yards at Joo Chiat Place. The foundations of the Telok Kurau English School (that evolved into the Telok Kurau Primary School) were laid here in 1926. In 1930 Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew was admitted as a pupil and in 1931, former Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Hussien Onn joined.
With such illustrious alumni the school evolved over the years and became Telok Kurau East School before merging with Telok Kurau Malay School and Telok Kurau West School. In 1985 the amalgamated school became Telok Kurau Primary School and in 2001 the school vacated this location and merged with Bedok Town Primary School.
After being used as a student hostel for some years, The Yards leased the site in 2017 and transformed into an oasis for enrichment building upon its unique leafy surroundings with open fields and a diverse variety of plants crowned by a majestic kapok tree.
For young and for old, one can be enriched in the arts: be it visual arts or pottery; in dance and performance; in music and song writing or just improving one's linguistic skills. Escape the hustle and bustle of urban centres and shopping malls and retreat to this oasis of flora and fauna where two illustrious leaders started their journey of learning.
