Choa Chu Kang has evolved from a rural settlement of Chinese immigrants in early 19th century into a hub of residential complex with all amenities required for a modern urban lifestyle. The name of the place is derived from Chinese immigrants who were called "kang chu", where ‘kang' refers to river and ‘chu' refers to the clan name of the first headman in charge of plantations. The area is about 6 sq Km with an estimated population of 110,000. Out of 580 hectares of land developed by Housing Development Board (HDB), 52% is residential area where about 35000 flats have been built. Although most of these flats are 4bedrooms and 5bedrooms, there are also some 4700 units of executive type flats available.
The HDB Estate of Choa Chu Kang has all the basic and modern amenities such as shopping malls and recreational, educational and healthcare facilities. It is well connected by all available modes of transport. Like many other planned HDB Estates, various amenities are found within close proximity, making it a very convenient place to live in.
